A Triumph of Surgery

by James Herriot

Summary In English

It is the story of a little dog named Tricki. His mistress, Mrs. Pumphrey, was a rich lady. She overfed the dog. So, Tricki became very fat and fell ill. The veterinary surgeon, Mr. Herriot, was shocked at Tricki’s appearance. He knew Tricki’s problem. Tricki’s only fault was greed. So, Mr. Herriot told Mrs. Pumphrey that Tricki would have to be hospitalised. Mr. Herriot took the dog. At the hospital, he did not give any medicine to the dog. He gave Tricki less food and plenty of exercise. After some days, Tricki started taking interest in his surroundings. When Mr. Herriot told about Tricki’s recovery to Mrs. Pumphrey, she started sending eggs, brandy, wine for Tricki. Mr. Herriot and his staff enjoyed these things. After a fortnight, Mr. Herriot told Mrs. Pumphrey to take Tricki home. She called it a ‘Triumph of Surgery.’
